What is a leak test or pressure test?
A leak test (also called a pressure test) is a safety inspection that confirms propane tank connections and fuel lines are airtight after installation or repair work.
After a propane tank is installed or fuel lines are worked on, a technician must perform a pressure test to verify that all connections are sealed and no gas escapes. The test involves pressurizing the system to a specified level (typically 1.5 times the working pressure) and observing whether the pressure holds steady or drops. If the gauge pressure remains stable for the test period, the system passes and service can be turned on. If pressure drops, the technician locates the leak, repairs it, and retests until the system passes.
This test is a safety requirement in Florida before any propane gas service becomes active. It protects against dangerous gas leaks that could pose health risks, create fire hazards, or cause fuel waste. Propane suppliers and their licensed technicians perform these tests using pressure gauges and often soapy water or electronic leak detectors to pinpoint problem areas such as loose fittings, damaged regulators, or faulty valves. A passing leak test is proof the installation meets code and is ready for customer use.
